Outside Gully Overflowing When the Sink Empties

If wastewater spills out beside your home, here is what the overflow may reveal.

If wastewater spills out beside your home, here is what the overflow may reveal.

Recognising a gully

An outside gully receives wastewater from certain household pipes or rainwater depending on the installation. If it overflows every time the kitchen sink empties, the outlet downstream may be restricted.

Not every gully is connected the same way

Some installations separate rainwater and foul drainage; others vary with the property age and local arrangements. Do not assume that anything entering the gully necessarily travels to the foul sewer.

Check for obvious debris

Leaves and mud near the grating may be visible, but the obstruction may be hidden within the trap or connecting drain. Avoid putting your hands into contaminated water.

When rain changes the picture

If overflow happens only during storms, the cause could include a rainwater restriction or capacity problem rather than a kitchen waste blockage.

Getting it investigated

Describe when the overflow happens and whether it smells of sewage. A drainage specialist can assess the route and clear an accessible obstruction where appropriate.

Safety first: If sewage is entering your home, reduce use of connected fixtures, avoid contact with wastewater and arrange suitable help. Never enter a manhole or inspection chamber.
