Gurgling Drains When You Flush the Toilet

Gurgling can be a clue to restricted flow or a ventilation problem. Here is what to look for.

Gurgling can be a clue to restricted flow or a ventilation problem. Here is what to look for.

What makes the noise

As wastewater moves it displaces air. An obstruction or ventilation fault may make that air escape through a nearby trap, producing bubbling or gurgling.

The timing is important

Does the basin gurgle when the toilet flushes? Does the shower bubble when the washing machine empties? Identifying the combination can help locate the affected branch.

Look for more than noise

A little noise is not a diagnosis. Slow draining, bad smells and water rising elsewhere make investigation more pressing.

Do not keep testing a failing system

Repeatedly flushing to reproduce the sound can trigger overflow if there is an obstruction.

What a contractor may check

The specialist may inspect traps, pipe layout, ventilation and the connected drain before recommending jetting or repairs.

Safety first: If sewage is entering your home, reduce use of connected fixtures, avoid contact with wastewater and arrange suitable help. Never enter a manhole or inspection chamber.
