Kitchen Sink Won’t Drain: Is It the Trap or the Drain?

Practical clues to distinguish a blocked sink waste from a wider drainage problem.

Practical clues to distinguish a blocked sink waste from a wider drainage problem.

Begin with the symptoms

A kitchen sink emptying slowly on its own often points to a local trap or waste pipe restriction. Grease and food debris are common culprits. If a downstairs toilet is affected as well, the obstruction may be further along.

Check safely

If you are comfortable doing so, remove visible debris from the plughole. Do not dismantle plumbing after using chemical drain cleaner, as liquid trapped inside can cause injury.

What gurgling can mean

Gurgling may result from air moving through a partially obstructed pipe, but it can also be linked to poor venting. Its presence alone does not tell you precisely where the fault is.

Avoid the wrong repair

Replacing the sink trap will not cure an obstruction in an external drain. Equally, extensive drain jetting may be unnecessary for a small, accessible waste-pipe blockage.

What to tell a specialist

Mention whether there is a dishwasher or washing machine connected and whether the sink backs up when those appliances discharge.

Safety first: If sewage is entering your home, reduce use of connected fixtures, avoid contact with wastewater and arrange suitable help. Never enter a manhole or inspection chamber.
