Is Drain Relining Better Than Digging?

Understand when no-dig relining may help, and when excavation may still be required.

What relining is intended to do

A suitable lining can provide a new inner surface within an existing drain without excavating its entire length. It is not a universal answer to every fault.

The pipe must be suitable

Extent of damage, shape, access, junctions and the need to clean the pipe affect whether lining is sensible. A seriously deformed or obstructed drain may not be suitable.

Get clear evidence

Ask for CCTV images, the length and location to be lined, and an explanation of how connections will remain usable.

Compare the options

For a short accessible defect, local excavation may be simpler. For a long buried section beneath a driveway or extension, a suitable no-dig solution could reduce disruption.

What happens afterwards

Ask whether the contractor will inspect the finished work and explain what the guarantee covers and excludes.

Safety first: If sewage is entering your home, reduce use of connected fixtures, avoid contact with wastewater and arrange suitable help. Never enter a manhole or inspection chamber.
